love

The sad fact of the matter is that I’m pretty skint right now, my bank balance is still recovering from Christmas! The fiance and I have been budgeting like mad as we’re hoping to go away in April to a country lodge with it’s very own hot tub. So although we want to celebrate Valentine’s Day in style, we’ve agreed to go budget-friendly, and I for one am quite excited.

You might think that you can’t make Valentine’s Day special when you’re broke, but you’re wrong. There are so many budget-friendly ways you can celebrate the day of love, it’s about getting creative. To give you a helping hand, here’s some ideas that I plan on using to make my budget-friendly Valentine’s Day extra special.

Make your card and present

We’ve agreed not to buy presents, however I’ve told the fiance a card is a must. If you’re strapped for cash, why not make your partner’s card instead of buying one? They’ll love the fact that you’ve put in the time and effort to make them a beautiful card.

Breakfast in bed anyone?

What’s more romantic than breakfast in bed? Start the day off right by serving your significant other their favourite breakfast while they’re still nice and comfy in bed. Be it blueberry pancakes – a personal favourite of mine, poached eggs and smoked salmon or a good old bacon sarnie, it doesn’t matter. Don’t forget to pop it on a try with a cup of fresh coffee, a glass of juice and a little vase of flowers – it’s the small touches that make all the difference.

Or if you’re not a cook, how about taking them out for breakfast instead? There’s a little place near where I live that the fiance and I love, so we’ll probably end up in there on Valentine’s Day morning. At least it’s cheaper than going out for dinner!

Spend the day together

Plan to spend the whole day together doing things you enjoy. Take the dog for a lovely long walk. Go rock pooling on the beach. Stroll around your nearest town, discussing what you’d buy if you were rich. Drive until you find somewhere new and spend the day exploring.

Don’t want to go out, stay in and spend some much-needed one-on-one time together. Have a movie day – spend all day in your pjs snuggled up on the sofa. Bake together – homemade pizzas anyone? Play cards or your favourite board game.

Plan a romantic night in

Can’t afford to go out? That’s okay, plan a romantic night in! This year, the fiance and I will be having a night in, and I couldn’t be more excited. He’s offered to cook for me, but we’ll probably end up opting for one of those fancy meal deals that Waitrose and M&S do for Valentine’s Day.

If you fancy doing the same, make sure it’s like a real date. Lay the table like a restaurant – candles, flowers and heart-shaped confetti and get all dressed up in your fave date night outfit. Oh and don’t forget to do your hair and makeup too – treat it like a real date and it will feel like one.

Just because you’re skint, that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate in style!
