If you’re someone who lives and dreams fashion, then style is always going to be an important part of your life. Another important part of your life is your partner – the person you share all your hopes and dreams with.

The only problem is, when it comes to style, he seriously lacks it. It’s not like you love him any less because of it or are embarrassed to be seen with him, it’s just that you’d like to help him reach his full fashion potential. Obviously, you don’t want to embarrass or upset him, so it’s important to be careful about how you go about it.

Find out why he dresses how he does

Unless your beau has a very particular sense of style, the chances are he dresses the way he does for comfort. Many men opt to dress for comfort instead of style, but what they don’t realise is that they can achieve both. What you need to do is show him that he can be just as comfortable in a pair of jeans as he can sweatpants. It’s just a case of finding a pair that fit well, and so, are comfortable. While skinny jeans look great on most guys, if your man is a little large built, opt for a straight-legged cut instead. Whatever cut he goes for, find a pair that contain lycra, so they’re stretchy and comfortable, like his beloved sweatpants.

Surprise him with new clothing

He might not want to shop for himself, but that doesn’t mean you can’t shop for him. If there’s a store that sells stylish men’s clothes that you know would look good on him, visit it and pick out a couple of pieces for him. Tell him how you saw it, loved it, and knew it would look great on him. Even if he’s not sure about it, ask him to try it on for you. Often, getting him to try a new style is half the battle, once he’s got it on, he’ll most probably like how he looks in it.

Get a helping hand

If you’re struggling to overhaul his dress sense on your own, it might be worth getting a little help from the pros. Instead of taking him to see a personal shopper – something he would probably refuse to do anyway, use an online personal stylist. There are some fantastic stylists around that, so you have plenty of options.

Flatter him

Every time he tries on a piece of new clothing, make sure to flatter him. Often, men aren’t very confident when it comes to clothes, and so when they try new things they need lots of encouragement. Small compliments like, “I can’t believe how good that looks on you” and “Oh my goodness, that style is so flattering”, are ideal.

You might think it’s impossible, but with a little gentle encouragement, you can help your man to dress to impress. He might take a little persuading to try new things, but once he sees how good he looks, he’ll never go back to his old ways.
