Spa Review: Spa Experience By Better Taunton*

Last month, I was invited to visit Spa Experience By Better in Taunton for a treatment and spa day package. After having a hectic month, I jumped at the chance of a relaxing pamper day, especially as I was able to bring a plus one along with me.

I hadn’t actually been to a spa before, so I was incredibly excited to be invited along to test out the facilities and have a treatment. I must say, Spa Experience didn’t disappoint – we had an amazing time.

Located in Taunton, the Somerset branch of Spa Experience By Better is part of the Blackbrook Pavillion Leisure Centre, however, it has its own separate building on the side and is run and managed by Spa Experience. There are Spa Experience locations situated across the UK, so wherever you are located you should be able to find one fairly close by.

Offering a selection of over 50 health, beauty and relaxation treatments as well as ‘Spa Day’ experiences, there’s plenty on offer to choose from.

On the day…

We headed to the spa for 11 am with our treatments booked for 12.30. When we arrived, we found that parking was free, which was great as it meant we didn’t have to worry about how long we were there for, we could simply relax and enjoy the day.

We were booked in for a Thermal Spa Experience and a La Sultane De Saba Ayurvedic Shirodhara, described as:

“This is the ultimate full-body holistic treatment, which will take you on a journey of the spices. It contains a highly specialist blend of cinnamon, clove, cardamom, ginger, anise, rose and geranium, to brighten the skin and uplift the soul. Shea butter is used to encase the key energy points (chakras) and the Shirodhara then drizzles rose water and an oil blend onto the chakras. A bowl dances over the body, immersing all the senses in a feeling of absolute relaxation and wellbeing. Then, warm spice-infused poultices are used to massage using our amber, vanilla and patchouli oil. All this is followed by a hands-on massage.”

On arrival in reception, we were welcomed to the spa, given robes, towels and flip-flops and directed to the changing room where we could change into our swimwear ready for our treatments.

Relaxation Room

Once we were changed, we were directed to the Relaxation Room where there were five relaxation loungers, calming music playing and the most delicious cucumber and mint infused water I had ever had. We were also given a complimentary glass of champagne while we laid in the Relaxation Room reading magazines, letting the stresses and strains of daily life drift away.

Thermal Spa

After some relaxation time, we headed to the Thermal Spa where there is a hydrotherapy pool, a steam room, a sauna, a monsoon shower, and an ice fountain.

The concept behind the Thermal Spa is to cleanse impurities and improve health and wellbeing by heating and cooling the body and then repeating the process. The combination of heat followed by cold is able to reduce feelings of pain, fatigue, relax muscles, detox your skin and clean impurities, and improve blood flow and cardiovascular health.

We decided to start our Thermal Spa experience with a stint in the sauna, which is a ‘dry’ heat treatment room that is wooden lined and heated to 90 degrees, with the idea being to induce perspiration to cleanse the body of any impurities.

Once we were well and truly sweated out, we headed to the monsoon shower to cool off. The water in the monsoon shower was scented, with different scents being linked to different experiences, for instance, you could choose a warm tropical downpour or a cool tropical mist, each of which comes with its own set of sounds and scents. To cool down we began with a cold tropical downpour, followed by a combination of the other settings – we wanted to test them all out.

Next, we headed to the hydrotherapy pool and relaxed in there for the next 20-minutes or so, enjoying the pressure of the multiple jets, designed to pummel any muscle stresses and strains away.

I totally loved the Spa Experience By Better – it was an utterly relaxing day from start to finish. I will definitely be heading back there soon for another day of relaxation, rejuvenation, and tranquility.
