The mistakes that many people make, is looking at things as one enormous step, rather than the series of baby steps that it actually is. This makes it seem seriously overwhelming, and some people even opt not to do what they were going to do in the end.
If you want to start working towards the job that’s perfect for you, don’t waste any more time. Here are the baby steps that will help you:
Write Down Your Ideas
If there’s a particular industry or career that you’ve sort of always thought about, write it down. People usually have a few ideas like this. For example, you might think: teacher, gardener, IT support specialist, etc. Those careers are very different, so if your list has a varied list like that, you need to figure out what is actually going to be suited to you in the long run.
Know Your Passions, Values, And What Motivates You
Now you’ve got your list, it’s time to assess your passions, values, and what motivates you. Ask yourself the following questions so you can figure these things out:
- What could I talk about forever?
- What would I do for free?
- What do I value most in the world?
- What do I stand for?
- How do I want to help people?
- What problems do I want to solve?
- What gets me working hard?
- When do I feel the most engaged and excited?
Once you’ve asked these questions, you should have a good idea of what you’ll need in your role/environment. You may be able to narrow down your list even more.
Take A Personality/Career Test
There are multiple personality and career tests that you can take online to help you decipher the industries and careers that will suit you best. There’s nothing to say these are 100% accurate – only you know this for sure. That being said, they can help you to narrow down things further and give you things to think about.
Find A Way To Test Out Different Options
There are ways you can test out the ideas you’ve come up with, so once you’ve got a more accurate idea, it’s time to commit to this. Could you take courses, or go to a workshop? You could even volunteer to get a good idea of whether something is right for you.
Pay Attention To The Way You Feel
Make sure you’re willing to listen to your gut and not block it out. Your gut may tell you that a career isn’t right for you, but you may let your brain overrule it if you know the money is good. Don’t let this happen! Your gut is rarely wrong.
