working from home

When I tell people that I work from home, often the first response I get is “Oh you’re so lucky, you can stay in your PJs all day”. Yes, I could do that, just like you could go to work dressed as a clown if you really wanted to, but I don’t. I get dressed, do my hair and put on my makeup every single day. Okay, sometimes I skip the makeup, but I ALWAYS have a shower, get dressed and do my hair before starting work. I mean, why wouldn’t I?

I might be working from home, but just like you, I have a job to do, and to do that job properly I need to be in the right mindset. I don’t know about you, but for me, PJs signal to my mind that it’s time to relax and unwind. Plus, staying in the clothes you slept in all day is just gross. (Apologies to anyone who does this, I’m a little OCD when it comes to germs!)

Okay, so we’ve established that I don’t just roll out of bed and start work, but what is my work day fashion and beauty like?

What I wear to work

On work days, I tend to wear jeans or leggings paired with a knitted jumper or oversized checked shirt. I like to feel fresh and ready for work, but also cosy and comfortable. I have a lovely pair of H&M leggings that are super thick, that I love teaming with a crop top and jumper – they’re just so comfy. Sometimes, if I’m in the mood to dress up a little more, I wear a day dress, a knitted cardigan and thick woollen tights. I always make an effort every day, just like I would if I worked in an office. Granted, I don’t dress formally, but I do always ensure I’m showered and presentably dressed, so that I’m ready to face the day.

How I do my hair

Unless I’m going out somewhere, I tend to wear my hair up. My hair is quite long and tangles super easily, so if I wear it down while I’m working it gets in my way and always ends up in a mess. Often, I wear my hair in a fishtail plait, a bun or ponytail, so that it’s neat and out of my way. I am one of these people who can’t concentrate if their hair is in their face, so I always keep a hair band on my wrist and my Tangle Teezer on my desk.

What about my makeup?

I don’t always wear makeup when I’m working because I don’t need to. I am quite lucky when it comes to my skin, it’s not normally acne-prone, so I don’t feel the need to cover up. Obviously, if I’m going out I’ll put on some makeup, but when I’m working, I don’t always bother. (I like to give my skin a breather every now and then.) If I am going to wear makeup while I’m working, it tends to just be BB cream, a little powder, eyeliner and mascara, and that’s it. I don’t usually bother contouring or highlighting, as there’s just no point.
So no, is your answer, I don’t wear pjs to work in. I get up, shower, get dressed, and prepare for the day. I like to feel well presented and fresh when I start work, not as if I’m ready for bed.
