Late last year, the fiance and I moved to a new city. Until then, we had always lived in large towns, but never a city, ever in our lives. It was a big move to make, a big change, but one that I am 100% sure was the right one.

We love the city that we live in – it has absolutely everything that we could ever need. We are just a short walk from the city centre while being set back enough that we have peace and quiet when at home – we have the best of both worlds.

Of course, just because we love city life, that doesn’t mean that every so often we don’t like to escape the hustle and bustle for a quieter and slower-paced way of life. The fiance and I both grew up in rural areas, close to the beach, so we often crave time outside of the city, like most people do.

I completely believe that when it comes to living in a big city, it’s important to getaway occasionally for a number of reasons.

It’s good for your mental health

I always think that while the hustle and bustle of city life is great 90% of the time, it can become somewhat overwhelming at times. The city can become too loud and too busy, and sometimes you just need a break from that. Whenever I am feeling like my mental health is not in the best place, I consider taking some time out of the city and heading to somewhere a little quieter and more tranquil. I’m not alone – I have a lot of friends who live in London and often get trains from London Bridge to Brighton for a short break away, to spend some time outside of the city in a calmer and quieter place.

It’s fun

Going somewhere new is always going to be a lot of fun – it’s exciting getting away from the same old places and going to somewhere different. Exploring new places, finding new things to do, and taking time out for the things that you enjoy can be a lot of fun. Doing a new activity or taking the time to do a much-loved one can be a lot of fun, whether it’s playing a round of golf, going paddle boarding, or simply sitting in the sun reading your book, you will feel much happier as a result.

You can relax

It’s often hard to fully relax and unwind when you’re at home, which is why getting away can be an important step to take. When you get away from home you have the opportunity to switch off from all of the stresses and strains of everyday life, and instead, you can actually relax. There’s nothing to worry about, no work to do, no chores that need your attention, no surprise visits from friends – you can completely relax.

I like to get out of the city every so often so that I can take some much-needed time out for myself. I’m actually doing just that this Bank Holiday weekend – heading off on a relaxing beach break, and I can’t wait!
