Fashion trends change each season, and so do beauty trends. Personally, I always prefer the autumn-winter beauty trends compared to the spring-summer ones, as I am a big fan of berry tones, dewy skin, and lots and lots of glitter.

It’s nearly Christmas *squeals with excitement* which means that if you haven’t already, it is time to get your festive makeup looks down. I personally have been toying with a range of makeup looks for the festive season for at least three months, and have so many ideas for how I plan on doing my makeup that my head could, quite literally burst!

In case you aren’t quite sure how to do your makeup for the upcoming festive period, below I thought I would share some AW beauty trends and hacks of how to perfect them. For this post I have teamed up with Ellisons, to bring you all of the best AW17 makeup and beauty hacks and ideas.

Let’s start with eye makeup…

Whether you want to make a statement with your eye makeup or prefer a more subtle look, there are plenty of ways that you can ensure that this Christmas your eye makeup is on fleek. Whether you are a gal who loves bold, graphic detailing or romantic neutrals, there are plenty of eye looks that you can take advantage of.

What do Ellisons suggest?

For metallic grunge: A seductive smokey eye is a look many clients will be familiar with so why not transform this classic trend for Autumn/Winter by adding a metallic shimmer to eyes. Combine warm and brown eyeshadows with metallic coppers and silvers to create a glamorous grunge look that clients will love. For a subtle twist on this trend, add a metallic eyeliner to the waterline of your client’s eye to create the illusion of wider eyes, as well as adding a stylish edge.

Romantic neutrals: Soft, pastel eyeshadows are the perfect choice for those hoping to achieve an understated look this Autumn/Winter. Add dreamy peach, pink and brown shades to your client’s lids to achieve a romantic eye look that’s ideal for both day and night. Brown mascara will complement this look perfectly, ensuring a natural finish.

Graphic eyes: Not for the faint-hearted, the graphic eye look takes inspiration from bold 80’s eye make-up, using bright, neon shades to create an eye look that’s guaranteed to make a statement. Add a selection of vivid eyeshadows and liners to your make-up collection to ensure you’re able to create a look that’s sure to wow on special occasions. Whether your client opts for a simple neon cat eye or bold, bright eyelids, the graphic eye look is a trend that’s set to stun this Autumn/Winter.

What are my best tips?

When it comes to creating the perfect eye looks, I have a selection of tips that I swear by. I am the kind of girl that likes to mix things up every now and then and try new looks, but I always seem to come back to the same looks once I am done playing around.

Use pigmented eyeshadow: As a rule of thumb, I would always recommend using eyeshadow that is highly pigmented. This is because these eyeshadows tend to be easier to apply and also last much longer. I am a major fan of colour pop – I love, love, love how pigmented their eyeshadows are. I also like the Makeup Obsession eyeshadows, particularly the metallic ones – these all seem to be highly pigmented.

Start out with primer: If I want an eyeshadow look to last all day, which I usually do, I tend to use eyeshadow primer before applying my colour and design of choice. My personal favourite eyeshadow primer is Mac Paint Pots, as I love the creamy consistency of the product and how easy it is to apply. My personal favourite Mac Paint Pot is ‘Perky’ – I love the colour and how well it seems to work with most eyeshadow tones.

Find the tool that works for you: When it comes to eyeshadow application, one of the best pieces of advice that I can give you is to find a tool that works for you. Whatever you do, don’t use your finger, as the oils in your skin will make your eyeshadow less likely to stay in place for as long. My tool of choice is either a So Eco eyeshadow brush – the mini version – or a Spectrum Collections eyeshadow brush, both are fantastic!

Don’t be afraid to use stencils: Want to get your eyeliner spot on? Don’t be afraid to use stencils – I personally have never been able to do upper lid liner, so I tend to use an eyeliner stencil to ensure that my cat eye is as perfect as possible.

If you want to use glitter, use liquid: A word to the wise, don’t use loose glitter on your eyelids, it is a total recipe for disaster. (I speak from experience when I say that!) Instead, use a liquid glitter eyeshadow, like Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow.

Time to talk lips…

With so many lip trends to choose from, it can be difficult to choose the perfect one for your look. When it comes to Christmas lips, there are so many options to choose from, aren’t there? Personally, I love strong, berry tones, however not everyone is a fan of such bright, bold colours – some people prefer to keep things simple with neutral shades.

What do Ellisons suggest?

Barely-there ombre: The nude lip has long been a popular trend within the make-up industry. Next season will see this classic look paired with a hint of pink colour at the centre of the lip, creating a stylish ombré effect. Not just for hair, on-trend ombré is now making its way into the world of beauty so why not incorporate this multi-tonal technique into your client’s lip look.

Poppy red gloss: A classic red lip never goes out of fashion. Past seasons have favoured the matte red lip however, this Autumn/Winter will see the return of a 90’s-inspired glossy lip. Pair your client’s bold red lipstick with a slick of lipgloss for a look that’s sure to make a statement.

The blood-stained look: It’s no secret that vampy lips are a staple trend during the cooler months. Taking inspiration from the carefree, party lifestyle of the nineties, next season’s vampy lip combines smudged, imperfect application to create a blood-stained effect. Apply a bold, berry shade to your client’s lips and ask them to blot to remove any excess colour for a faded, worn look.

What are my best tips?

When it comes to choosing a lip look, I have a range of useful tips to share with you.

Choose the right formula: Lipsticks come in all manner of formulas, from cream to liquid and beyond. Personally, I am a real fan of cream lipsticks, as I find that they are easier to apply and also that they tend to last longer than gloss, for instance. Liquid lipstick is another option that I like to wear from time to time, however, it has to be a lipstick that lasts well and doesn’t dry out my lips. If you want your lips to look amazing, it pays to choose the right lipstick formula.

Sheer or matte: Personally, I am a sheer lipstick girl, as I find that matter lipsticks tend to dry my lips out. However, I do love how matter lipstick looks on other people. When it comes to picking a lipstick type, make sure to consider which option is the best fit for you and your outfit.

See how different shades look on your skin: Before buying any lipstick, make sure to consider how it will look with your skin tone. Different skin tones suit different lipsticks, which is why it is important to check which tone suits you, before you make a purchase. Pop swatches up the inside of your arm and use them to choose a shade that is a perfect fit for you.
