freckles

Today, I thought I would talk breakouts and blemishes. Recently, my skin has been majorly temperamental – pimples, blackheads, dryness, you name it. This got me thinking about how to beat these problems and most importantly, what the root cause tends to be. You see, when it comes to breakouts and blemishes, many of us focus purely on how to treat them. Whereas, we should also be thinking about what has caused the problems in the first place.

As my skin got worse, I found myself getting more and more down about it. So I decided that I needed to act and quickly, to ensure that the blemishes and breakouts I’d been having didn’t continue. After a lot of trial and error, I think that I have finally found the best way to keep my skin happy and healthy, and I just had to share them with you.

Work out the root cause

The first thing that you need to do is work out what’s causing the breakouts and blemishes. The truth is this is a lot harder than you would think as there are so many factors to take into account. The best tip that I can give you is to focus on the things that have changed, as the chances are one of them could be the cause.

The most common causes of breakouts and blemishes are food, beauty products, unclean makeup tools, and trapped dirt and oil on the skin. It’s just a case of working out which factors are affecting your skin and finding the best ways to prevent the problems in the future. For me, I found that a new foundation I was using was the most likely cause of the problem, so I stopped using it. Four days later and my skin was in much better shape, no breakouts and no blemishes.

Make cleansing a priority

As well as cutting out what you think could be the root cause of your breakouts and blemishes, it’s also important to make cleansing a priority. One of the main causes of breakouts and blemishes is trapped dirt and oil, that’s why cleansing your skin twice a day is so important.

There are some great products out there that you can use but my personal favourite is Clearasil Ultra 5 in 1 Cleansing Pads. I love how these pads come in a handy pot already soaked in cleansing serum, so all you have to do is wipe your skin and then chuck them away. There’s no hassle or fuss, so they’re perfect for using when waking up and before going to bed. I would recommend using a product like this, or something containing aloe vera, witch hazel or tea tree oil. I also use an aloe vera face scrub from Forever Living that has been fantastic for my skin. After cleansing, either via pads or facial scrub, I smother my face in my favourite moisturiser – Forever Living Aloe Moisturising Lotion.

Be choosy about your makeup

A word to the wise, always be choosy about your makeup. Sometimes, simply swapping one product can leave your skin in a seriously bad state. Often, it’s products containing chemicals and irritants that are the problem, so keep an eye on what’s in your makeup and beauty go-to’s. A good way to check how your skin will react to a new beauty buy is by testing it on a small area behind your ear. This should show you whether your new beauty product is suitable for your skin or whether it will cause irritation and blemishes.
