Recently, I’ve been in the process of having a new website designed for my freelance business. Freelancing is something that I’ve been doing for years, but I’ve never had a really nice website, so I thought that this year would be the year that I had a proper website designed – people are always asking me for my link, so it made sense to have one created.

Anyhow, as I’ve been spending a lot of time talking to a web designer about my new site, I’ve got a better idea than ever before about what a business website needs to standout. So, I thought that I would share what I’ve learned, so that you are also in the process of having a website designed or plan to in the near future, you have a good idea of what you need to do to ensure that your website will give you the best chances of business success.

For everything that you need to know, keep reading.

Choose a unique name

I always thought that when it comes to naming your business/website the name should reflect the service that you provide. So, for content creation, I thought something like ‘The Content Creation Service’ would be ideal – a name that is simple and to the point. However, it turns out that picking a unique and memorable name is actually a much better idea. The examples I was sent over by my web designer were things like Blue Frog Media and Carved Lamb Media, which made me realise that the more unique the name, the better.

Only use quality images

While some companies do use free images from the internet on their websites, it’s really not a good idea to do so. Think about it this way, imagine you use an image off of the internet that your brand becomes known for, then because it’s a free image a competitor brand also starts using it – this would be a total nightmare, wouldn’t it? To avoid these kinds of issues, it’s best to hire a professional photographer to take unique images for your site, so that you know only you have access to them and no other brand can use them. Yes, it will cost more, but it’s something that’s definitely worth doing.

Pick a colour scheme that’s exciting

When it comes to picking a colour scheme, it’s easy to make the mistake of thinking that neutral colours are the best option as they are more professional. However, that’s not actually the case – if you look online at all the most popular businesses, you will see that their website are bright and colourful, not grey and boring. So, as my web designer told me, don’t be afraid to use colour.

Share the story of your brand

As well as having an ‘About Us’ section on your website, it’s also a good idea to have a section that shares the story of your brand. So, who makes up the brand, what your background is, where your skills lay – just little things like that. You see, the brands that tend to be the most successful are the ones that share their story and explain why the brand was created in the first place.

So, there you have it, all the key elements for making your business website stand out.
